Privacy Policy for Musings
Last updated: 16 September, 2026
This privacy policy explains what information Musings ("the app," "we," "us") collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. It applies to anyone who uses the app.
Who we are
Musings is developed by Asghar Hasnain, the developer account holder listed on the App Store and Google Play. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at zainh8296@gmail.com.
Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account, we collect the email address and display name you provide. We ask for your birth year at signup solely to confirm you meet our minimum age requirement (13+); we do not store the birth year itself — only a yes/no confirmation that you meet the age requirement is saved.
Content you create. Posts, comments, and any background/color choices you make when creating them are stored so the app can function — including displaying them to other users in the shared feed.
Reports you submit. If you report a post or comment, we store the report reason, which content was reported, and which account submitted it, so we can review it.
Device push notification token. If you allow notifications, we store a token that lets us send you notifications (for example, when someone comments on your post, or an occasional prompt inviting you to post). This token doesn't contain personal information on its own.
Automated content review. Before a post or comment becomes visible to others, its text is automatically checked by a third-party moderation service (OpenAI's Moderation API) to screen for harassment, self-harm content, and sexual content. This automated check does not use your identity — only the text itself is sent for review. See "Third-party services" below.
What we do not collect. We do not collect your exact birthdate, location, contacts, photos, or any device data beyond what's described above. We do not use your content or account information for advertising, and we do not sell your data to anyone.
How we use your information
- To operate the app: creating your account, displaying your posts and comments, showing your name and content to other users in the shared feed
- To keep the app safe: reviewing reports, running automated content checks, and taking action on content that violates our guidelines (removing it, or in serious cases, restricting an account)
- To send notifications you've opted into (comment replies, occasional prompts)
- To respond if you contact us for support
Who can see your content
Musings is not anonymous. Posts and comments are associated with the display name you chose, and are visible to other users of the app. There is no private/anonymous posting mode in this app.
Content moderation and reporting
Every post and comment is automatically screened before it becomes visible to others, using OpenAI's Moderation API (see "Third-party services"). Content flagged as high-confidence harassment, self-harm content, or sexual content is not published. Content in a lower-confidence range is held for manual review by the app's developer before being approved or removed. You can also report any post or comment you believe violates our guidelines; reports are reviewed manually.
Blocking
You can block another user. Blocking hides that user's content from your feed and prevents them from seeing your content. We retain a record of who you've blocked so this setting persists.
Data retention and deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. When you do, you choose one of two options:
- Remove everything you've posted — your posts and comments are permanently deleted, along with your account and profile.
- Keep your posts and comments, but remove your name from them — your account and profile are deleted, but your existing posts/comments remain visible with your name replaced by a generic placeholder.
Either way, your account, email, and profile information are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate Musings:
- Firebase (Google) — authentication, database storage, push notification delivery, and backend functions. Firebase's own privacy practices are governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- OpenAI Moderation API — automated screening of post and comment text for harassment, self-harm content, and sexual content before publication. Only the text content is sent for this check — not your name, email, or account identifiers. OpenAI's data practices for this API are governed by OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
Children's privacy
Musings requires all users to be at least 13 years old. We ask for a birth year at signup to confirm this; accounts cannot be created if the entered birth year indicates the user is under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that a user under 13 has created an account despite this measure, we will delete the account and associated data. If you believe a child under 13 is using Musings, contact us at zainh8296@gmail.com.
Your choices
- You can edit your display name at any time in Settings.
- You can delete individual posts or comments you've authored.
- You can block other users.
- You can disable push notifications at the operating system level (iOS/Android notification settings) at any time.
- You can delete your account and choose how your existing content is handled, as described above.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
